First Holy Communion is one of the three Sacraments of Initiation in the Catholic Church. As we celebrate these sacraments, we draw closer and closer to Jesus Christ as we perfect our faith. As a child receives the Body and Blood of Christ for the first time, the whole Church rejoices with them as they can now join in this ultimate gift of love.
First Communion is celebrated in the spring (usually May) of a child's second-grade year. Leading up to the sacrament, there will be weekly classes with the students to prepare them for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. Students should be enrolled in Parish School of Religion one year prior (First Grade) to making their First Reconciliation and First Communion. Students must complete a minimum of 30 hours and have no more than 3 unexpected absences during the course of the year. Our teachers use The Spirit of Truth Curriculum by Sophia Press and students also enjoy videos from the "Blessed" series by Dynamic Catholic. First Reconciliation and a retreat for students and parents are held the week prior to First Communion.
If your child is in need of this sacrament and is not enrolled in our Parish School of Religion program, please contact the office at (985) 796-3806 or the Direction of Religious Education, Alicia Lee at (504) 512-7321 or [email protected].
